Elizabeth Dixon
Hi! Thank you so much for stopping by to learn more about Play 2 Learn! Play 2 Learn is a program for young children— ages birth to 5— offered for FREE at Duluth Middle. Children and parents and other adults in the family learn TOGETHER through engaging lesson plans in a high-quality preschool environment for 90 minutes each week during the school year. Families are empowered to keep the learning going at home so that all children will be ready for Kindergarten! We have two classes for you to choose from, Tuesdays from 12-1:30 and Wednesdays from 1-2:30. The classes at Duluth Middle have an added bonus of 8th grade students who think they would like to become teachers come and work with the students during our class time. Our Duluth class has been featured in the AJC as well as CBS News for the innovative idea to combine two already existing programs into a fun environment that benefits all students. Teaching as a Profession
Jeff Mraz
Examining the Teaching Profession is a high school level course, offered for 8th grade students here at Duluth Middle School. This course provides students with an introduction to the field of education, exploring various aspects of teaching and learning.
Students will be introduced to the world of education of the past and today, teaching strategies, human growth and development, classroom management, public speaking, planning for instruction, technology in the classroom, and measuring whether learning has taken place.
Students will have the unique opportunity to work closely with mentor teachers at the school, gaining hands-on experience and insights into the daily responsibilities and challenges of educators. Additionally, they will participate in the Play2Learn program, which emphasizes learning through play and interactive activities, fostering a deeper understanding of educational concepts and child development.
This course aims to inspire and prepare students who are interested in pursuing a career in education, while also developing valuable skills such as communication, leadership, and teamwork.
Teaching as a Profession/Play 2 Learn Partnership
As one of only two Gwinnett County middle schools offering both Teaching as a Profession (TAP) and Play 2 Learn, our TAP students have the unique opportunity to work directly with the youngest learners. Eighth grade TAP students work with our play to learn program once per week. This initiative benefits both groups by fostering mentorship and leadership skills in older students while providing personalized attention and support to younger students. The program enhances the learning experience for younger students and builds confidence and responsibility in middle schoolers.
This partnership was highlighted in a news article that you can read here.
